TOWARDS BETTER CITIES
Urban design must play the main role in the progress of our cities. It should cope with our time and must be opened for different approaches, solutions and available technologies to enhance our daily life which is strongly related to how we, as citizens, interact with our urban context. On of my dreams is seeing our cities more civilized, more connected to people and their activities and considered as a source of their national pride. Urban design as a tool could help efficiently in reaching that through holistic development strategies and plans to provide answers to our local problems in practical ways.
On 13 February 2006, I attended a lecture entitled 'Recent Projects' given by Mario Botta, one of the masters of postmodern movement in architecture, in Bibliotheca Alexandrina. I was really possessed by the huge number of projects he worked on which he called them his “recent Projects”. At the end of the lecture a smart girl – I think she was a student – asked him: “How to get to where you are today?” He answered “one day I asked the same question to Louis Khan, his answer was “Work, work, and work”. His words stick to my mind till now. Throughout my career and experiences I gained and people I met, his words still have a real validity.
I am preparing myself to be one of the effective urban designers in my society, trying to participate in enhancing our cities and urban spaces through learning, reading, discussing, practicing, being exposed to different experiences, and before all of that, hard work.
